Pitch

In our pitch it explains our early ideas and what we plan to do for our music video, as well as some of the basic concepts of the mood/atmosphere that we will attempt to create.

Key points:

  • Two characters wearing V for Vendetta masks act as two people trying to tempt the main character into getting drunk, using drugs etc.
  • One represents the street, the lower classes (Wears jeans and a hoodie over the mask), the other represents the upper classes (wearing a suit and a top hat).
  •  All about having a good time, but not necessarily in the right way, although it will take place in nightclubs and pubs etc. We do want to use some form of culture in it in order to attract upper classes.
  • Start scene takes place in a pub, preferably with a jukebox.
  • Main character being tempted is going to be used as unsure of what particular class he is in, so he does not take preferences to either the upper or lower class tempter.
  • Day and night life, good during the day and bad during the night.

Feedback:
  • What are you going to do to attract older audiences?
Film in older locations e.g. top of the hill near the Lincoln Cathedral, well lit areas, places that look smart and well presented.
  • Are you going to do a performance based video? (including the band within the video)
No, we are aiming to try and create a story for our video instead of just filming us playing musical instruments, because none of us do use musical instruments in the first place.
  • Will everybody be wearing the masks?
No, just the two tempters in order to not create confusion of who is who.
  • Too many ideas?
We are aiming to get as many ideas as we can, then use a trial and error scheme to rule out the ones we are not going to include in our video.

Changes made as a result:

Both masked characters are his original friends who change throughout the video.
Two different for each character, e.g. without the mask, smart casual, with mask, suit and hoodie with jeans.
Setting is going to take place in the Aston Arms pub, early morning for a quiet intro?
Alleyways - one by a butchers and a bridge?
Bottles of alcohol - different for both classes e.g. Jack Daniels for upper class, vodka for lower.
Fags - lower class cigarettes, upper class cigars?
A music system of some kind, preferably older jukebox, but we can use an iPod system.

Early Music Video Ideas

During thinking and deciding our genre and song choice, we thought of a variety of early ideas to include in our finished music video:
  • Story would follow a main character (uncast at the moment) who would be turned to the side of the "Wicked" as suggested by the song.
  • Main character would be tempted by two "tempters" or demon-like characters (represented by the idea of two devils on each shoulder in replace of one angel on his right shoulder). These two entities would act as beings that only the main character can see (i.e. a friend would offer character a bottle, cigarette etc. but from his point of view, it is one of the entities offering him the same and tempting him).
  • Costume of tempters- would be wearing anonymous Guy Fawkes masks while clothes represent extremes in social class. One (Me) would wear the mask under a hoodie and jeans to represent lower class and would offer a bottle of vodka or a fag etc.(shown below) Whilst the other (Lewis) would be wearing a plain suit and top hat to show higher status, offering whiskey/champagne or a cigar etc.
Image of Guy Fawkes/anonymous mask hopefully in similar costumes- eyes would be blacked out underneath to show they are not human

This is part of the costume I would be wearing if we chose to do this idea for our music video.

Intro:

First idea was of a jukebox playing the start of the song (diagetic sound later moving to non-diagetic song) which would then pan around from the music player to the main character slumped over a bar unconscious.

Second idea of a character who is slightly more nerdy, unsociable who later becomes a wreck due to the influence of the tempters.

Target Audience Analysis

In our group we have decided on who our target audience would contain, as well as the demographics and psycho graphics:

Age: 15-25 because this song was advertised and used as an introduction within a video game, this suggests it's aimed towards a younger audience.
Gender: We have decided that the majority that would find this appealing are teenage boys, but this does not mean we are excluding the opposite gender, as we think they may be the minority that enjoy the music.
Class: Working to middle class simply because of the type of rock our song choice is, I would describe it as new generation rock, because it is aimed at a younger audience. The song Ain't No Rest For The Wicked is also used in an introduction to the video game 'Borderlands'. This suggests the song is being advertised to the younger generation.
Races: Currently we have decided that the main race that would find this appealing is the white race, as we find it to be within the actual culture e.g. the music video shows a background of America's desert region and the people found within it, but we are not excluding any other race that find this appealing, but find they may be the minority in the target audience.

We found a couple of music videos that are similar to the one we are doing:

These two songs show a similar tone to the song we have chosen. This was also aimed at a younger audience.

Song choice

For our group piece, me and my group partner Lewis Hodson, have decided to choose 'Ain't No Rest For The Wicked - Cage the Elephant'. The genre is Rock and we chose this song because we both know it well and it was the only song we looked over that sprung a lot of ideas of how and what to film, We're also very familiar with the song and are very fond of it.

Ain't No Rest For The Wicked lyrics:

I was walking down the street
When out the corner of my eye,
I saw a pretty little thing approaching me.
She said I never seen a man,
Who looks so all alone,
Oh, could you use a little company?
If you could pay the right price,
Your evening will be nice,
And you can go and send me on my way,
I said you're such a sweet young thing,
Oh why you do this to yourself.
She looked at me and this is what she said.

Oh, there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees,
I got bills to pay,
I got mouths to feed,
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
Oh no I can't slow down,
I can't hold back
Though you know, I wish, I could,
Oh no there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good.
-for-the-wicked-lyrics.html ]
Not even 15 minutes later,
I'm still walkin' down the street
When I saw the shadow of a man creep out of sight,
And then he swept up from behind,
He put a gun up to my head,
He made it clear he wasn't looking for a fight,
He said give me all you've got,
I want your money not your life,
If you try to make a move I won't think twice,
I told him you can have my cash,
But first you know I've got to ask,
What made you want to live this kind of life?

He said there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees,
I got bills to pay
I got mouths to feed
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
Oh no I can't slow down,
I can't hold back
Though you know I wish I could
Oh no there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good.

Well now a couple hours passed,
And I was sitting in my house,
The day was winding down and coming to an end,
And so I turn to the TV,
And flipped it over to the news,
And what I saw I almost couldn't comprehend,
I saw a preacher man in cuffs
He'd taken money from the church,
He'd stuffed his bank account with righteous dollar bills
But even still I can't say much
Because I know we're all the same,
Oh yes we all seek out to satisfy those thrills.

You know there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Money don't grow on trees,
We got bills to pay
We got mouths to feed
There ain't nothing in this world for free.
Oh no we can't slow down,
We can't hold back
Though you know we wish we could.
Oh no there ain't no rest for the wicked,
Until we close our eyes for good.
