Mise en Scene

Costume:
For our costume we are looking for two different kinds:
For the main role (protagonist) we are looking for normal and rough looking clothing, such as a smart shirt and jeans to start out with which slowly degrades the further into the video you watch, as if to present a passing of time, this enables us to create a realistic view on our video, e.g. video starts out with the protagonist being sober, well presented and gradually deteriorates as he drinks more alcohol throughout until you end up with a rough looking drunk, splayed out on the bar intoxicated.
What we would like to use for our 'normal' clothing costume:

This kind of casual 'ready to party' look would be perfect for the introduction of our music video as it portrays the protagonist as if from a middle class background, quite unfamiliar to the party life etc..
What we are thinking of using for our rough looking clothing costume is to possibly stain the black shirt on something quite strong looking and prominent in order to create a realistic protagonist who is going through a drunken nightmare e.g. brandy/whisky/something with strong, bold colours, and perhaps obtain a different pair of jeans with holes in the knees and use mud on the white trainers to create a down in the dumps, rough looking character:

This type of costume mentioned above is also what we are aiming to use with most other characters, also the tempters when they are not using the masks e.g. posing as the protagonist's friends need to look as if they are also from a middle class background in order to fit in with the protagonist's role.
We want to do this to ensure there is less of a confusion to whereabouts the characters lie in terms of acting roles, for example, giving the protagonist's friends rough costume at the start would confuse the audience as they are meant to be of the same background as the protagonist.

For the secondary main characters, the Tempters, we are looking for a different costume for both Tempters.
As one is going to be an upper class 'posh'-type figure, we have decided he will wear a suit and tie, with the mask on and a top hat or smart looking hat such as a fedora or trilby. The mask also looks more defined and detailed, resembling a thorough background which shows one of the tempter's being upper class and seen as 'superior' to the rest of the roles in the music video:

A costume such as the man on the left's suit and tie and the guy in the centre of the shot who is wearing a hat. Those items of clothing are the rough lines of what we are aiming for to create the upper class Tempter's costume.

For the other Tempter we need a lower class rough and dirty look, so we have decided the Tempter will wear a hoodie (with the hood up), the Guy Fawkes mask, track bottoms and cheap Nike trainers. The mask is less detailed and relatively cheap looking which lacks the correct colour of the Guy Fawkes mask and also lacks detailed features of the upper class Tempter's mask, this is a stereotype of the lower classes because they are known to buy the cheapest things such as knock offs or replicas.

A costume such as within this picture, Guy Fawkes mask, hoodie and track bottoms is what we are aiming for to create the lower class Tempter so as to not confuse the audience of which background this Tempter comes from.

As for the background characters who will be included within party/pub scenes, clothes similar to the first set will be used, as for girls, similar/dresses are going to be used, as long as it looks like they are at a party or a social occasion such as the pub and that they do not look too rough the clothing will be applicable.

Lighting:
We are going to film in a wide range of settings and areas, which means that the lighting will be different, as some times are going to be during the day, and others at night, we are also planning to film one scene during the evening at sunset.
This means that the lighting is going to be different at regular points, as we do want this music video to look relatively 'dodgy' e.g. filming in low places, dark environments to emphasise the 'dodginess' of that particular place etc. and also filming in quite refined places e.g. filming in 'posh' places, bright areas of significant attraction, we are going to adjust the lighting accordingly, a higher key for the upper class areas, and low key for the lower class areas, e.g. in pubs it will be relatively low key. In places with architecture and a large amount of culture taking place e.g. a theatre or outside and independent cinema, the lighting will be of a higher key and so on.

Actors:
The person who is going to play the role of protagonist is called James Hunter:
We decided to choose James because he showed the best expression and the most realistic reaction.
He can also recreate a 'rough look' better than the other person, Josh, due to being able to grow a beard and is also more familiar with night life.

The people that will play the role of the Tempters are called Lewis Hodson and Jamie Kirman:
(pictures here)
We are both going to be the secondary main characters as we are in charge of the filming and making of the music video, Lewis also has the right accessories in order to portray the upper class tempter, and Vice versa for me.
As for the background characters, we currently only have a short, rough listing of a few people that may star in the music video, but it will mainly be whoever we can grab and who turns up on the day of filming. But mostly we will only need myself, Lewis and James for the filming although for some scenes we will need someone to operate the camera to help us record it all.

Make-up:
For the use of make-up within our music video we are going to be using a variety of different kinds of make-up.
To start with we are going to use facial make-up in order to create a rough, tired look for the protagonist to make a night of boozing look more realistic. If need be we will also use hair gel to create a rough tussle of hair that presents even more realism in our music video. This same idea will also be used on his two friends that accompany him throughout the music video, although we are not planning on his friends playing an extensive part.
Apart from the protagonist and his friend's make-up not much else will be used in terms of make-up.

Props:
For the use of props within our music video we are using various different objects depending on the scene, for some it will be bottles of alcohol filled with water, juice etc. to still keep an edge on the music video, and still keep it somewhat realistic. Such as a bottle of vodka which is filled up with water so that it is harder to tell the difference between real and fake.
We are also considering movie set props such as breakable objects e.g. fake glass and fake chairs/bottles etc. in order to create a fight scene.
We will need some empty cans, pizza boxes, game boxes etc. in order to create a messy drunken scene where the three friends have gone home with takeaway and more booze and also in order to paint out a scene and represent what is going on.

Setting:
Settings within our music video will take place in different locations around Lincoln and the outlying area, such as pubs and clubs within Lincoln and Market Rasen. The introduction scene will take place in a fancy type of pub called the Aston Arms:

We chose this pub to start our music video in because it has an upper class to middle class look to it, although it is placed in a different area to what would seem appealing to the upper class population.

We are also going to film some of the scenes in a house/flat of some sort to resemble a house party or a place to chill out, this setting will look messy and unkempt in order to keep an outlook on the protagonist's life, as it will resemble his surroundings, as if he is a student.
The next bunch of locations we are going to film in is around Market Rasen, e.g. down it's high street, parks, other pubs etc. this will give us a more diversifying outlook on the protagonist's activities.
The last location we are going to film in is a train station, which will signify the end of the music video, we plan to film here so that the protagonist can act out the ending.

Job Roles

This post is for a list of people inquired within our film who will help us to film it, act it and edit it. There is also a description of what the job entails and why this person has been chosen for that particular job role.

Job Role 1 - Director(s)

Jamie Kirman and Lewis Hodson.

What the job entails - Motivation of the actors and general overseeing of the entire scenes being filmed, basically the person in charge with the general idea of how it is all going to be filmed.

Why these people have been chosen - Because this is our project and we feel that both our opinions should be taken into account of howthe film will be in it's finished production.

Job Role 2 - Camera Operators

Ella Kirk, Jamie Kirman, Lewis Hodson

What the job entails - Operating the camera movements, angles, shots and positions.

Why this person has been  chosen - When we are acting Ella will shoot for us but when we are not needed in front of the camera we prefer to film it ourselves in order to come out with the best idea in our opinion.

Job Role 3 - Editors

Jamie Kirman, Lewis Hodson

What the job entails -  putting the whole of the filmed scenes together, making sure it all fits and works nicely and finishing off the final touches to create a music video.

Why these people have been chosen - Because yet again it is our project and we would like to be as independant as possible without much outside help to the creation of our music video, plus we would also like to create the video within our image as much as possible.

Job Role 4 - Costume Designers

Jamie Kirman, Lewis Hodson

What the job entails - Creating and designing the costumes for the characters to use within the video.

Why these people have been chosen - Because we came up with the idea and we are partway through designing it ourselves and as I said before we are trying to be as independent as possible.

Auditioning Video for the Role of Protagonist

In the video we had a couple of people, James and Josh, auditioning for the role of protagonist within our music video. The general ideas of the audition was to see which person could create the best shocked facial expressions and make it look realistic.
We have come to a conclusion that James is the more preferred actor for the role of protagonist, although Josh portrayed some promising acting, we decided James was the better option.

Characters and Casting

Name: Simon
Male, Young adult (17-20)
Role: Protagonist, the one influenced by the two tempters.
About: Video centers around him and his nightlife and what he does.

Possible cast:
James, Male, 18
Why? He is familiar with nightlife and also looks quite 'street', which would appeal to the video idea we have in mind.

Josh, Male, 17
Why? He can look both working and upper class, and also has a certain 'nerdy' look that we are thinking about (the idea of a person who is a so called nerd being turned into a 'badass').

Characters and Actors:
Main character 'victim' - A young man aged 17-20 who has been approached by two unknown figures wearing masks who attempt to corrupt him through the temptation of drugs and alcohol, this is stereotypically known as the working class way of life. The idea we have thought up strongly reminds me of the story of Dorian Grey.

Lewis Hodson and Jamie Kirman - The 'tempters' in the video, the two unknown masked persons and the secondary main characters, they cause the protagonist to feel a disturbance of his nightlife as he is the only one who can see them and at first he attempts to resist them, but near the end he gives in to the two tempters and becomes corrupted. The two tempters are the extremes of Western society, one being the working class or 'proletariat', (drugs, alcohol and mugging...) whilst the other is the 'elite' class, the rich and the powerful. We are also the two people who are going to lip sync at certain times in the video.

Background 'Friends' - A group of people who act as friends who are acquaintances of the protagonist, they represent typical modern youth, all about having a good time, relaxed and drinking.

Student Video Analysis 1 - The Good

Character:
The characters included in this video are the band who sing and perform for the audience, as well as a girl who seems to be in a relationship with the lead singer. So conclusively there are 5 characters starring in this music video. Three of the four members do not interact with the audience at all and are just there to play their instruments, the fourth member sings, his lip synching to the song is also extremely good, as well as his acting e.g. if he is building up to the chorus, he looks like he is doing so instead of just miming the song.
Mise-en-Scene – CLAMPS:
Costume – The costume used in this video is very casual, consisting of normal every day clothing such as hoodies, jeans, T-shirts etc. which creates quite an informal atmosphere.

Lighting – Lighting for this video was very well used and extremely well enhanced, e.g. in the band performance scenes the lighting is relatively high key, but there is darkness in the background, this can be seen as a clever technique used by the producers in order to attract as much attention as possible to the band playing by blocking out everything else in the background. The lighting is also used to enhance and emphasise the lead singer's appearance. The lighting is also used to create atmosphere within the video, e.g. during the band performance scene as the song reaches it's chorus the lighting is seen to turn down to near low-key lighting, this connotes the climax of the music video and can be used to increase the viewer's interest.
Actors - The actors starring in this video consist of 5 people, 4 are band members, the 5th is a girl who takes part in the scenes where the band are not performing. The leads singer looks very much like he is genuinely singing the song, the hint of realism within his music video creates a good effect of increasng interest as the lead singer looks like he is putting effort into singing the song. As for the other actors in the band, they also look like they are playing the instruments, and also conduct with a familiarity of those instruments, hinting to the audience that these 4 actors are probably in a band themselves.
Make up – As far as the audience can tell no make-up is used within the making of this video, as the four boys look normal, no face paint, hair gel etc. and in the scenes with the girl it is too dark to see her face properly.
Props – One of the major props used in this music video are the musical instruments and gear such as the guitars, microphones, drum kits etc. These create a very large sense of realism in this video as the band members use them with familiarity which makes it look like they are actually playing the song. Other props used are 'memento' type props such as photographs which signify a story is being told by looking at these.
Setting –  The music video is set in a studio/hall where the band perform as if it has been done professionally, but you cannot see what type of place they are using very well as stage lights are used to enhance the image of the band as they perform. Th music video also takes place in a couple of other locations, predominantly one is on top of a hill overviewing a city, this is where the lead singer and his girlfriend come in to the video as they are casually hanging around that area, possibly waiting for the sun to rise as it is early in the morning. And the last place where the music video is set is in the lead singer's room where he looks at a picture of someone unknown to the audience until a short scene is shown of the picture frame being empty.

Iconography:
There is a diverse use of iconography within this video, firstly is within the scene on the hill where the lead singer and his girlfriend are sat, the scene keeps on switching to him and his girlfriend, then to the lead singer by himself, this could signify that something is not entirely right. This further on then switches to a scene of him lying in his bedroom looking at a picture frame, because this is aimed away from the camera the audience does not know what the picture is until later on when the picture frame is viewed and it is empty, this could connote that his girlfriend has possibly left him, or that something is missing.

Narrative:
Narrative within this video is only of the song playing, no overhead voice is used.
Themes:
The theme for this music video basically consists of a relationship going wrong between the lead singer and a girl unknown to the audience, and throughout the video it shows certain momentos of their relationship being good and happy in some places and bad in others, but as the song comes to the end it goes wrong and the girl leaves the lead singer.
Sound:
The only sound used within this music video is of the song.
Editing:
For editing there are some fantastic pieces used to pique the audience's interest, such as at the start of the music video there is a series of cuts to various scenes of filming such as the lead singer on top of the hill, cars passing by a motorway in fast motion, which could connote the passing of time, as well as small cuts between instruments before they have been picked up by band members etc. and this all happens in the first 12 seconds of the video.
Another feat of editing done by the makers of this video is using the overview of the city and the sky and filming it, then speeding it up to connote the passing of time, I think this is very clever as it gives off a certain sense of tension within the atmosphere as the song builds up to its chorus.

Camera:
There is a very wide range of shots and movements used within the video, so much so that there are not many instances where only the basic shots are used. Some of the more complex movements and angles are shallow and deep focus, hitchcock zoom, blurring so only lights can be seen (picture to the right) etc. as well as integrating the basics into the  video such as long/mid shot and close up, some establishing shots are also used, as well as zoom which appears commonly in this video e.g. zooming out to see the entire band, or zooming in only to see the lead singer, the zooming is also not done slowly but is instead done with speed and precision.
There are also some unusual camera shots taken that would not ususally be thought up, but yet provide a different perspective of the scene. (Picture to the right).

Overall I think this is an extremely well done video which has been very well acted, shot and put together.

Student Video analysis 2 - The Bad

Character:
The characters starring in this music video consisted of two people, one was represented as red riding hood, the other represented as the wolf, this was done using mainly clothes worn, the costume has a large impact on the video.
Mise-en-Scene – CLAMPS:
Costume – For the Red Riding Hood character, the costume consists of a very bright red coat with her hood up, some light crey trousers and boots, her hair is also dyed a dark red. The aim of this is to catch the audience's eye as much as possible to her coat which represents her character. for the Wolf, the person wears dark clothes such as a black hoody, a balaclava covering the lower half of his face and dark grey trousers to connote evil.
Lighting – Unfortunately, I believe that lighting is not really taken into much consideration within this video, as mainly natural lighting is used, this creates quite a disappointing piece in my opinion, as lighting could have taken a large part in this video, with Red Riding Hood being part of the light, and the Wolf being a part of the darkness. But as all scenes are taken place outside, only natural lighting is used.
Although in one of the scenes of which animation was used in it showed the girl running away, and slowly taking the light away with her. This could connote that she resembles the light and the Wolf resembles the darkness.
Actors - There are two actors in this production, a girl and a boy, it is unclear what the relationship between the two is, but something hints towards romance, yet at the same time it also hints towards harm and evil. This is because the boy chases after the girl, whilst the girl constantly trys to evade and escape him, but it is unclear as to why apart from the boy being connoted as the 'Wolf'.
Make up – It is unclear if there is any make-up used on the male actor as his face is always covered, and on the female actor only the usual every day make up has been used. The red hair dye used to make the girl's hair a dark shade of red could be considered as part of the make-up.
Props – As far as the audience can tell no instance of props were used. The video literally consisted of a 'Wolf' chasing the 'Red Riding Hood' character. In my opinion this could have been done better, as certain objects could have been integrated into their music video to increase the similarity of the actual Red Riding Hood story, e.g. stand an axe in the corner of one of the scenes, or use a wooded area/housing area.
Setting –  The entire video is set around a couple of areas. The outside of a college/school of some kind and the side of a road where some vegetation has accumulated, these two places in my opinion give off no particular effect to enhance the interest in the video, if there had been some scenes taken place in a wooded area more interest may have been shown in the music video, and to me it also feels like they filmed in those places because they planned poorly.
Iconography:
There was quite a lot of iconography used within this video, the dominant objective being Red Riding Hood's coat, in this instance the video did show off the bright colour of the red coat extremely well, and I considered it to be eye catching to the audeince and a good connotation of the Red Riding Hood storyline. I also believe that the girl's unusual eye colour did enhance the iconography of the Red Riding Hood figure as it connoted an air of uneasyness around her.
Narrative:
In terms of narrative the Red Riding Hood figure is the one singing the song 'Set Fire To The Rain' but unfortunately again the lipsynch was out of time by a second or two most times which gave it a very fake effect of singing the actual song.
Themes:
The theme used in this video was based off of the story 'Red Riding Hood', except it is just the girl being chased by a boy connoted as the Wolf, but no other parts of the story are included within the video making the entire theme they have set seem a little shallow and not very well thought.
Sound:
The only sound that has been used within this music video is the song 'Set Fire To The Rain' by Adele.
Editing:
There were some fantastic instances of editing within this video, one of the sides where the editors hve been rather creative with their thinking, as they have included some animation in their video. This can have many connotations, and in my iopinion this video would be very good if the producers cleaned up in some areas, e.g. the lipsynch and a small rethink of their storyline. But the animation in itself was well done, the drawings were neat and fluid, the animation could also connote their taking fo the Red Riding Hood storyline, that it is not meant to be real or logical, and that it is meant to be farfetched.
There are also a small few times when special effects are included, suchas the one in the picture to the right where a transition has been used to switch from the real life to the animated life. In my opinion this was done well, and emphasises the connotation of the Red Riding Hood storyline as I have said before.
Camera:
The use of camera angles within this music video unfortunately is disappointing. Yet again only the basics and one other shot of movement and angles were used such as close up, mid/long shot, tracking shot and handheld shot, pan and zoom. The other shot was a POV shot of the girl running whilst looking at the ground. To me this array of shots was quite disappointing, as yet again there is no variety, to me it seems like they just shot each scene once and called it a day, as if in a rush to get it done. Whereas if they had shot each scene a few times more from different angles and perspectives they could have ended up with a different and much more creative result.

Student Video analysis 3 - The Ugly

Character:
The characters within this music video “Beautiful” consists of three main characters who are boys, all three sing throughout the video, with no particular script lines allocated to them, they just seem to sing whichever line they want whenever creating a confusing video where all three of them seem to have the same voice. There is nothing particularly eye catching about the three singers, wearing casual clothing  they show no consistency throughout the video when they sing and the lip synch is very poor. My opinion of these three characters concludes that next to no effort was put in to their development of their three characters.
Mise-en-Scene – CLAMPS:
Costume – Made up entirely of casual clothing, the three main characters seem to saunter around in jeans, football shirts and hoodies; in my opinion this shows nothing of great or attention grabbing value and also seems to make the video rather shoddy or as if they did not plan ahead what they were wearing and just turned up in whatever they wanted.
Lighting – Mainly throughout the video there was natural lighting, as most of it takes place outside, yet again there is nothing special about the lighting as the filming does not take many angles into perspective of the light around the three characters and instead opts for normal angles and views.
For the lighting that took place inside, it is mainly during the night at a disco, so what lighting there is during those scenes is minimal, you can only just make out the three characters dancing. Yet again this makes the video seem shoddy as they have not taken the important parts of filming into mind such as their facial/body expressions, or if in fact that the audience can discern whether they are singing or not.
As you can see on the picture to the right, the three main characters are angled away from the camera and can literally only be seen dancing, no lip synching can be determined.
Actors - Apart from the three main characters there are three other background characters that star in this video, they take place in the disco scenes where they dance around awkwardly for a little bit before they assemble into a line and start waving their arms around as if they don’t really know what they should be doing. In my opinion this makes the video look shoddy and poorly organised as the disco looks very poorly staged, obvious and unconvincing acting is taking place.
Make up – As far as the audience can see, no make-up is used apart from possibly on the female background characters who dance around awkwardly in the disco scenes, but this is only an assumption as predominantly girls who go to discos or nights out usually wear make-up anyway. Apart from that assumption no clear use of make-up can be seen.
Props – There were certain points, although rarely, where props were used by the main characters, a significant use was of one of the characters wearing a pair of sunglasses possibly an attempt to make himself look cooler. It didn’t. Through this assumption yet again leads me to believe that this video was poorly organised.
Setting – The scenes are set in various locations such as a disco (possibly located in a hall of some kind), an abandoned structure, some streets, pathways and a concrete area. To me this does not resemble diversity in the locations chosen and rather seems to be filmed within a certain area, as I think the scenes location-wise are very close to each other.

Iconography:
I could not discern any use in the representation of imagery within this music video.

Narrative:
Only the song was played, meaning only the singer could be heard. Apart from the start of the music video before the music begun, when the three main characters where washing their hands in the bathroom, one of the characters said "Let's do this". I found this line to be amusing because it made me cringe with the cheesiness and overly used sentence.

Themes:
There was no particular theme to it that I could pick up on. I was literally just three boys walking to random locations and badly miming the song. No reference to the actual girl considered "beautiful" was made, to me it seems they were singing the song just for the sake of it.
Sound:
Just the song was played. No other sound could be heard apart from the introduction where the main characters were washing their hands in a bathroom.
Editing:
The editing to me seems to lack a little bit, almost as if they just threw it all together and didn’t bother with any transitions (apart from fade in and fade out), filters, visual or special effects, leaving the video seeming to be people walking to random places and singing about no particular subject they have focused on, as no girl in the music video was represented as the "beautiful girl".
Camera:
The use of the camera was mediocre. No particularly difficult or adventurous angles were used, only the basic angles were used such as mid, close and long shot, and only the basic movements such as pan and tracking shot and zoom. Apart from these shots there was nothing particularly eye catching or well done from the camera man.

Target Audience - Social Class Test

For the purpose of trying to understand what kind of class our target audience is I undertook the social class test found on the BBC website which can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-22000973

The first page asks you about your household income, because we are looking at the potential younger generations that would listen to our music video we have chosen the lowest setting, this is because the average younger person is not well established within the workplace yet as more experience needs to be gained, and so does not earn enough money to have things such as his/her own property or substantial savings/income.

The second page asks you about your social life, because this is the younger generation the only applicable boxes that we could tick were the two professions that work closely in line with younger people, professors and teachers.

The third and final page asks of your cultural activities, yet again because we are talking about the younger generation we go for assumptions of what we may think is true, so we  ticked 5 boxes, gigs, rock, video games, gym and Facebook/Twitter. These are all activities that are popular among the younger generation.

As a result of the options we have chosen for our target audience it has resulted in the social class Emergent Service Workers, the description is as followed "This class group is financially insecure, scoring low for savings and house value, but high for social and cultural factors."

In conclusion we are appealing to this audience through relating to their conditions, for example some of our scenes are shot in student housing, using props most likely found in accomodation of the younger generation, such as games consoles, alcohol or junk food etc.
We also class the song as "New generation Rock" where it is listened to most and also sung by the younger generation.

Target Audience Member Profile

In order to gain a specific view on our particular target audience I have created a profile with a more detailed view into the people of which the music and video would appeal to most. We interviewed people that fitted our demographics, and from that we have also created this profile on their likes, dislikes and preferances towards rock music videos.

Member 1:

Name: James
Age: 17
Gender: Male, Debatable
Ethnicity: White
Social class: Working

Interests, likes and dislikes:

For Film and TV James's favourite genres are comedy and sci-fi for example shows like 'Big Bang Theory' and 'Family Guy' whereas in films he tends to go for the sci-fi side e.g. 'Star Trek' or 'Alien'.
Conclusively, James enjoys watching something that is deemed as pure entertainment and which always keeps the viewer's attention and does not hold a moment of boredom.

For Music James enjoys the louder and faster paced side such as metal, punk and the earlier side of rock e.g. Queen, and loves the idea of power behind the music i.e. loud strumming of electric guitars and introducing difficult guitar solos, to compliment this James expects the same of music videos that he watches, the power not only has to be obvious to the viewer within the music, but also within the music video, as visual representation and some times can also be as important.

Member 2:

Name: Ben
Age: 20
Gender: Male
Ethnicity: White
Social Class: Middle

Interests, likes and dislikes:

For Film and TV Ben enjoys watching the more cultural side of media, this includes the classics of films instead of the newly released up to date ones, e.g. 'Silent Running', 'Blade Runner' and 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly'. This is because he believes the story and plot of these films is better than newer films in present day and prefers these over a film filled with action and gore. For TV Ben's taste is generally the same as his film taste is, preferring the older comedy shows, and cartoons, as well as some anime which shows his diversity for culture, as well as his taste for vintage shows that present a different environment to present day.

For Music Ben enjoys a diverse variety of music genres ranging from mainstream to niche e.g. Jazz and Early Rock. His favourite band is 'The Who' of which can be described as those of the early rock genre, like James, Ben also enjoys seeing that power in the music e.g. with a heavy guitar strumming or a heavy bassline. Ben also dislikes most modern day music, especially within mainstream media, so artists such as boy bands and pop stars do not appeal to him, as in his opinion it is not so much the music, but the image of the artists themselves which give him distaste to their songs.

Psychographics of our Target Audience

From the interviews of our Target Audience and through the information we have gathered we have found that through likes, dislikes and iterests our Target Audience generally prefer a diverse range of music, but not so much within the modern, mainstream genre as so much that they prefer the performance of the band themselves with musical capabilities instead of just a video of a single person/band of people singing for 5 minutes. From the information we have gathered we also come to the conclusion that our Target Audience do enjoy more modern day activities such as playing video games and interacting within social media such as Facebook or Twitter.

Target Audience Quiestionnaire

This questionnaire is going to be used for getting feedback from the people we are going to audition, this is so that we can get a base idea of opinions and ideas of the rock music genre in order to go with the other target audience work.

From this, we found that our target audience who enjoy listening to rock and watch rock music videos range between 15-20 and have no favourite genre preference. On average, our target audience spends 5-10 hours listening to rock music out of 10-15 hours listening to music per week. Overall, our audience prefers a mixture of performance and narrative based videos, with elements of disjuncture featured within them, and prefer any story to be experienced by the lead singer as the main character.

Target Audience Interview

In both interviews we asked 9 questions:

1. What do you find appealing in the rock music genre?

6. Do you enjoy listening to songs made for video games?
7. What do you want to see in this music video we're making?
8. What do you find unappealing about Rock genre music videos?
9. Do you prefer the narrative to make sense or to be more unique?

We asked these questions to two people, James Ward and George Griffiths, we asked these two people because they fit our target audience being people who are fond of the rock genre and play console and computer games.

Key findings:

  • Both people find the fast and upbeat pace most appealing about the Rock genre.
  • Pace of editing should match the pace of the song, if it is fast, editing should connote power, happy/fast paced should have lots of cuts etc.
  • George cannot find any other video ideas for 'Ain't No Rest For The Wicked' whereas James thinks the video should always include the band doing something, in order to attract appeal and to advertise themselves.
  • James says some certain songs will work with different types of media instead of just music, and those should be used accordingly.
  • Both people found a feeble or weak atmosphere unappealing about the Rock genre, is it was mellow and not very loud, "It just drags on, a slow narrative and slow music, it makes you very bored.".
  • Unique editing techniques would increase interest in the music video and make it better to watch.
Changes made:

  • We will attempt to match the pace of the song with editing and cuts.
  • Not using a band within our song as an "advertisement" of the artists as it can be less interesting.
  • Filming in older locations as well as urban and street environments in order to attract older audiences.
  • Using different camera and editing techniques considered unique and experimenting to see if they have any effect on the atmosphere of the film.
