Student Video analysis 3 - The Ugly

Character:
The characters within this music video “Beautiful” consists of three main characters who are boys, all three sing throughout the video, with no particular script lines allocated to them, they just seem to sing whichever line they want whenever creating a confusing video where all three of them seem to have the same voice. There is nothing particularly eye catching about the three singers, wearing casual clothing  they show no consistency throughout the video when they sing and the lip synch is very poor. My opinion of these three characters concludes that next to no effort was put in to their development of their three characters.
Mise-en-Scene – CLAMPS:
Costume – Made up entirely of casual clothing, the three main characters seem to saunter around in jeans, football shirts and hoodies; in my opinion this shows nothing of great or attention grabbing value and also seems to make the video rather shoddy or as if they did not plan ahead what they were wearing and just turned up in whatever they wanted.
Lighting – Mainly throughout the video there was natural lighting, as most of it takes place outside, yet again there is nothing special about the lighting as the filming does not take many angles into perspective of the light around the three characters and instead opts for normal angles and views.
For the lighting that took place inside, it is mainly during the night at a disco, so what lighting there is during those scenes is minimal, you can only just make out the three characters dancing. Yet again this makes the video seem shoddy as they have not taken the important parts of filming into mind such as their facial/body expressions, or if in fact that the audience can discern whether they are singing or not. 
As you can see on the picture to the right, the three main characters are angled away from the camera and can literally only be seen dancing, no lip synching can be determined.
Actors - Apart from the three main characters there are three other background characters that star in this video, they take place in the disco scenes where they dance around awkwardly for a little bit before they assemble into a line and start waving their arms around as if they don’t really know what they should be doing. In my opinion this makes the video look shoddy and poorly organised as the disco looks very poorly staged, obvious and unconvincing acting is taking place.
Make up – As far as the audience can see, no make-up is used apart from possibly on the female background characters who dance around awkwardly in the disco scenes, but this is only an assumption as predominantly girls who go to discos or nights out usually wear make-up anyway. Apart from that assumption no clear use of make-up can be seen.
Props – There were certain points, although rarely, where props were used by the main characters, a significant use was of one of the characters wearing a pair of sunglasses possibly an attempt to make himself look cooler. It didn’t. Through this assumption yet again leads me to believe that this video was poorly organised.
Setting – The scenes are set in various locations such as a disco (possibly located in a hall of some kind), an abandoned structure, some streets, pathways and a concrete area. To me this does not resemble diversity in the locations chosen and rather seems to be filmed within a certain area, as I think the scenes location-wise are very close to each other.

Iconography:
I could not discern any use in the representation of imagery within this music video.

Narrative:

Only the song was played, meaning only the singer could be heard. Apart from the start of the music video before the music begun, when the three main characters where washing their hands in the bathroom, one of the characters said "Let's do this". I found this line to be amusing because it made me cringe with the cheesiness and overly used sentence.

Themes:
There was no particular theme to it that I could pick up on. I was literally just three boys walking to random locations and badly miming the song. No reference to the actual girl considered "beautiful" was made, to me it seems they were singing the song just for the sake of it.
Sound:
Just the song was played. No other sound could be heard apart from the introduction where the main characters were washing their hands in a bathroom.
Editing:
The editing to me seems to lack a little bit, almost as if they just threw it all together and didn’t bother with any transitions (apart from fade in and fade out), filters, visual or special effects, leaving the video seeming to be people walking to random places and singing about no particular subject they have focused on, as no girl in the music video was represented as the "beautiful girl".
Camera:
The use of the camera was mediocre. No particularly difficult or adventurous angles were used, only the basic angles were used such as mid, close and long shot, and only the basic movements such as pan and tracking shot and zoom. Apart from these shots there was nothing particularly eye catching or well done from the camera man.
