Character:
The characters starring in this music video consisted of two people, one was represented as red riding hood, the other represented as the wolf, this was done using mainly clothes worn, the costume has a large impact on the video.
Mise-en-Scene – CLAMPS:
Costume – For the Red Riding Hood character, the costume consists of a very bright red coat with her hood up, some light crey trousers and boots, her hair is also dyed a dark red. The aim of this is to catch the audience's eye as much as possible to her coat which represents her character. for the Wolf, the person wears dark clothes such as a black hoody, a balaclava covering the lower half of his face and dark grey trousers to connote evil.
Lighting – Unfortunately, I believe that lighting is not really taken into much consideration within this video, as mainly natural lighting is used, this creates quite a disappointing piece in my opinion, as lighting could have taken a large part in this video, with Red Riding Hood being part of the light, and the Wolf being a part of the darkness. But as all scenes are taken place outside, only natural lighting is used.Although in one of the scenes of which animation was used in it showed the girl running away, and slowly taking the light away with her. This could connote that she resembles the light and the Wolf resembles the darkness.
Actors - There are two actors in this production, a girl and a boy, it is unclear what the relationship between the two is, but something hints towards romance, yet at the same time it also hints towards harm and evil. This is because the boy chases after the girl, whilst the girl constantly trys to evade and escape him, but it is unclear as to why apart from the boy being connoted as the 'Wolf'.Make up – It is unclear if there is any make-up used on the male actor as his face is always covered, and on the female actor only the usual every day make up has been used. The red hair dye used to make the girl's hair a dark shade of red could be considered as part of the make-up.
Props – As far as the audience can tell no instance of props were used. The video literally consisted of a 'Wolf' chasing the 'Red Riding Hood' character. In my opinion this could have been done better, as certain objects could have been integrated into their music video to increase the similarity of the actual Red Riding Hood story, e.g. stand an axe in the corner of one of the scenes, or use a wooded area/housing area.
Setting – The entire video is set around a couple of areas. The outside of a college/school of some kind and the side of a road where some vegetation has accumulated, these two places in my opinion give off no particular effect to enhance the interest in the video, if there had been some scenes taken place in a wooded area more interest may have been shown in the music video, and to me it also feels like they filmed in those places because they planned poorly.
Iconography:
There was quite a lot of iconography used within this video, the dominant objective being Red Riding Hood's coat, in this instance the video did show off the bright colour of the red coat extremely well, and I considered it to be eye catching to the audeince and a good connotation of the Red Riding Hood storyline. I also believe that the girl's unusual eye colour did enhance the iconography of the Red Riding Hood figure as it connoted an air of uneasyness around her. Narrative:
In terms of narrative the Red Riding Hood figure is the one singing the song 'Set Fire To The Rain' but unfortunately again the lipsynch was out of time by a second or two most times which gave it a very fake effect of singing the actual song.
Themes:
The theme used in this video was based off of the story 'Red Riding Hood', except it is just the girl being chased by a boy connoted as the Wolf, but no other parts of the story are included within the video making the entire theme they have set seem a little shallow and not very well thought.
Sound:
The only sound that has been used within this music video is the song 'Set Fire To The Rain' by Adele.
Editing:
There were some fantastic instances of editing within this video, one of the sides where the editors hve been rather creative with their thinking, as they have included some animation in their video. This can have many connotations, and in my iopinion this video would be very good if the producers cleaned up in some areas, e.g. the lipsynch and a small rethink of their storyline. But the animation in itself was well done, the drawings were neat and fluid, the animation could also connote their taking fo the Red Riding Hood storyline, that it is not meant to be real or logical, and that it is meant to be farfetched. There are also a small few times when special effects are included, suchas the one in the picture to the right where a transition has been used to switch from the real life to the animated life. In my opinion this was done well, and emphasises the connotation of the Red Riding Hood storyline as I have said before.
Camera:
The use of camera angles within this music video unfortunately is disappointing. Yet again only the basics and one other shot of movement and angles were used such as close up, mid/long shot, tracking shot and handheld shot, pan and zoom. The other shot was a POV shot of the girl running whilst looking at the ground. To me this array of shots was quite disappointing, as yet again there is no variety, to me it seems like they just shot each scene once and called it a day, as if in a rush to get it done. Whereas if they had shot each scene a few times more from different angles and perspectives they could have ended up with a different and much more creative result.
